Customer Appreciation Post – Bloom Bakers

As a continuation of our ‘Davpack Talks To’ series, we recently spoke with Bloom Bakers – an innovative bakery company based in Leeds – as a part of our customer appreciation posts. The bakery was founded by Saskia and Lisa, two young mothers who became close friends at their old jobs. Both women combined their passion for baking into a biscuit brand that creates bespoke and delicious biscuits for countless impressive customers. From Fendi, Facebook, Amazon, to individuals who are looking to celebrate a special occasion. Bloom Bakers are always excited to produce flavourful and uniquely designed biscuits that will improve the memorability of the moments shared amongst family, friends, colleagues and clients.

The Inspiration Behind Bloom Bakers

Whilst speaking about how the company lifted itself off of its feet, it seemed like fate had a role to play in both Lisa and Saskia’s lives. Saskia explained that she is originally from the Netherlands and Lisa grew up in Germany, both women moved to the United Kingdom at around the same time and began working for the same company in Leeds. Over the next year and a half, the two would become friends and discover each other’s love for baking. They both began dreaming and emailing each other with “What ifs?” about starting a new baking business together. Saskia decided to take the plunge and make a proposal to Lisa about beginning a bakery. The journey of Bloom Bakers originally started with Lisa & Saskia creating cakes and biscuits inspired by the bakes from their home countries and selling them at different farmer’s markets within Leeds. The delicacies became popular with customers and encouraged the build of a website that allowed corporate requests. Saskia and Lisa started to see an increase in traction of online enquiries and so, decided to lower their attendance at farmer’s markets. During the lockdown, the two founders thought that sales would significantly lower, however, out of nowhere requests for personalised biscuits by post spiked and allowed both women to quit their jobs and work full-time for the bakery.

During the interview, Saskia expressed that the idea behind the baking of personalised biscuits was an accident. “The first-ever online order that we received was from a woman looking for a gift for a friend of hers that had just given birth and she wanted the baby’s name written in biscuits”. This led to both Saskia and Lisa constructing a box of biscuits with the name lettered out in biscuit form. This special design sparked the idea of producing personalised biscuits alongside their other, more generic biscuit creations. One day, Lisa was in TK Maxx and discovered a biscuit stamp that she felt inclined to purchase, this triggered the idea behind the original personalised jam biscuits that Bloom Bakers now offer. With there already being a lot of personalised and messaged condiments on the market using icing, both Lisa and Saskia are proud to offer an alternative. Namely their larger Jammy Dodger-type biscuits with impressed messages or distinctive designs. “For corporate clients, we do a hand-pressed logo version of this biscuit. The biscuits are so ‘clean’ in their appearance, so natural and the biscuit tastes amazing, I always think that our biscuits impressed with our client’s logos are really impressive and super tasty; they don’t need much embellishment at all. Plus when you see a clients logo on there it transforms from being our biscuit to being completely 100% the client’s biscuit”.

The Experience of Mixing Home Life and Work

As previously mentioned, both Lisa and Saskia are mothers who love to work, but didn’t want it to be at the expense of nurturing their children. Saskia explained that their experience of combining baking and working at home with a family has been challenging. “When you become a mother, your whole life suddenly revolves around your child and keeping them alive, so you tend to forget about yourself a little bit”, stated Saskia. Bloom Bakers became a space where both women could come into their own again. Where they could create a space to connect with their creativity. When their children were still in nursery, it was difficult for both families to manage their time between concentrating on the business and being with the children. “It was difficult in the sense that Bloom Bakers isn’t just 9-5 where we can just switch off and be with our children, but the flip side is we can pick our own hours and always make sure we are there when the kids come out of school to pick them up”. Saskia expressed there is a combination of negatives and positives that have appeared during the founding of their business. However, as each child has grown older, the balance between work and family life has become easier.

The Two Ends of the Spectrum with Biscuit Creation

When asked about the most memorable biscuit order, Saskia explained how there was a lot of pressure around an order from Fendi which inclined both women to stay up working until 3 o’clock in the morning! The brief for the biscuits was incredibly intricate and precise; “the squares needed to be 90 degrees squared off and as we started to bake them, we started to realise it wouldn’t be as straightforward as we thought it was going to be. I think it was 150 that we had to make, but because they needed to be so perfect, we were just sweating on that order for the longest time. It was a lovely order to have because of the brand name but it was so tedious, it was a full night’s work!”

Even though Bloom Bakers has received some tougher asks in terms of orders, the opposite side of the spectrum has led to some incredibly innovative and impressive designs. Saskia and Lisa were requested to create gingerbread biscuits for Amazon, but the design on them was left up for discussion. Both the customer and Bloom Bakers spoke in-depth and agreed on the idea that Amazon’s brand colours would be implemented onto the gingerbread man and the mouth of the biscuit would be the Amazon arrow as a smile. “For such a simple biscuit, the design and branding on it were lovely”.

Bloom Bakers revealed that they use one of our letterboxes to fit their biscuits in for smaller orders, and for larger ones they use a range of our brown mailing boxes. Our packaging services have enabled the company to save a significant amount of money on postal costs along with the fact that each biscuit is now packaged safely and securely, ensuring they arrive at their destination in one piece – an essential for a biscuit bakery brand! Saskia went on to reveal that we always deliver in time and as a supplier, we can be relied upon to deliver high-quality packaging to our customers.
