Storage Boxes: The monster under the bed

Given the choice between an old or modern house, I’m one to go for the old every time. There are, of course some disadvantages, as I’d be the first to admit. They’re usually colder and more draughty, more likely to leak, more expensive to maintain, the walls are rarely even close to being at 90o to each other, they creak a lot at night, doors tend not to fit very well and, if you’re in a terrace, you’ll probably have to park on the street, often a considerable distance away from the house itself.

On the other hand, they’re a lot less likely to have been built on a flood plain.

There are, however, two key areas which make them far preferable for me every time:

1. Character, aka the potential to give a child sleepless nights

I was raised in a succession of new builds, which were all very nice and efficient in their way, but didn’t really lend themselves to creative play or scaring younger siblings. Let’s face it, it’s hard to imagine your house is haunted if it’s younger than you are.

Nor were there any dark corners where it was easy to envisage a lion or knife wielding maniac might be lurking, just waiting to leap on you and do you to death. I’m fairly certain no monsters under the bed either, which is a shame because they could have retrieved the numerous toys I’m sure I lost there.

2. Storage

Modern house builders get so carried away with making the most of the available space that they rarely remember that some things need to be put away occasionally (such as vacuum cleaners, half empty paint pots, brooms, mops and noisy children). In the modern house, especially on an estate where profits need to be maximised by cramming as many houses in as possible, individual rooms are smaller than in old houses, leaving less space for large cupboards and wardrobes, there’s no such thing as a cellar, attics are tiny and the space under the stairs is invariably a downstairs loo.

Davpack stocks many storage solutions, one of which is a personal favourite and especially pertinent to the foregoing musings. For among the range of aptly-named Really Useful boxes is one designed to fit neatly and discreetly under the average bed. And with a capacity of 50 litres, it’s pretty huge as well, perfect for storing large quantities of toys, clothes, linen etc.

You might even go as far as to say that, as underbed storage boxes go, it’s something of a monster.
