Delivery charges going through the roof?

With the introduction on 2 April 2013 of a new pricing structure for parcels, the Royal Mail has forced online retailers to think carefully about the boxes they use to send their products to their customers.

With hundreds of customers likely to be affected by the new policy, Davpack has been investigating the likely cost to traders of using a box than is larger than necessary for their deliveries. The results should be of interest to anyone planning to send parcels in the UK via the Royal Mail.

For example, if you have a parcel weighing 1kg you want to send first class on a Royal Mail business account, it would cost you £3.22 as a small parcel – ie if it measures no more than 450 x 350 x 160mm (or 160 x 160 x 160mm).

Go a few millimetres over those sizes, however, and it becomes a medium parcel – and that would cost £4.97. That’s a difference of £1.75!

That may not sound like too much on its own, but if you’re sending 20 of those parcels a day, it quickly adds up – in fact, we’re looking at an extra £245 a week, or £12,740 a year!

Davpack has therefore introduced a new range of postal boxes designed to help businesses stay within each category and avoid accidentally accruing unwanted extra charges. Our Small Parcel Saver Postal Boxes are proving particularly popular with customers coming to terms with this whole new way of planning their day-to-day costs.
